The One and Only by Emily Giffin

Ever since reading Something Borrowed, I have been a big fan of Emily Griffin.  She has a way of drawing you in and relating you to her characters.  Which is why I was hesitant on reading this one since it was based on football and the state of Texas.  No offense to either, but I am a midwest girl who has never gotten into the game, however, I did get into this book.

Shea has been a die hard Walker football fan since birth.  This is all due to her mother's best friend Connie whom happens to be the wife of the talented Coach Carr.  Shea is also best friends with Lucey, the coaches daughter.  So it only makes sense that Shea attended Walker College and landed a job there after college, reporting stats for the football program.  She has a wonderful best friend, extended family with the Carrs, and is dating Miller, a nice guy who played football for Coach in college.  Life seems to be pretty good, until the coaches wife passes away and all of their lives seem to change drastically.

After the funeral, Lucey gives Shea a hard time about dating Miller.  She wants more for her best friend than just a nice guy.  She wants her to fall in love.  Shea has been hearing this from Lucey for awhile, but doesn't take it seriously until Coach calls her in his office for a heart to heart.  From that conversation, Shea ends things with Miller and takes a writing position for the Post.  From there her life seems to continue to change when the star quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys Ryan James falls for her after his messy divorce.  Shea seems to have it all, but why doesn't she feel like she should?  Her job is challenging in a good way and she is still able to write for Walker football while actually reporting football versus stats, and her relationship with Ryan is a dream world.  She still can't fathom why he chose her, but something is missing.  She could love him eventually, but her heart as she continues to discover, belongs to someone else.

Shea has always looked up to Coach.  Her own father wasn't always in the picture so her fatherly advice often came from him.  She also admired him as a coach of her favorite sport for her favorite team.  The feelings she had, were confused with his role in her life.  She couldn't be in love with him.  he was 20 years older than her and his wife just passed away, but as they spent more and more time together during football season, a connection developed that neither could ignore.  As more events transpired and their feelings grew, both continued to hint without saying directly how they felt.  It was like they were playing along with their normal lives concealing this hidden secret.  Finally after a scary night where Shea saw Ryan's dark side she had been warned about, her and Coach crossed that line and knew they could never go back.  The only problem now was that they had to tell Lucey.

Lucey had just lost her mother, was struggling with connecting with her dad since her mother had always been the buffer, and now finds out her best friend and father love one another.......this was all too much.  She refused to accept it and demanded they choose between their love and her.  Shea then had to decide if this was all worth loosing her lifelong best friend.

I have to be honest, when I read this and started to see the signs of Shea having feelings for her best friend's dad, I was turned away.  However, I forced myself to keep reading because I wanted to see if it was a "daddy issue" thing or real.  It kept drawing me in and I loved the ending.  Was it my favorite Emily Griffin book?  No, but I really enjoyed a different story than I typically read.  I am a firm believer that you can enjoy a book you would never relate to in life.  I couldn't stop reading until I was done and there were plenty of twists and turns to keep me interested. I definitely recommend it.
